The Beauty of the Moon

“If skies are clear Saturday, go out at sunset and look for the giant moon rising in the east. It will be the biggest and brightest one of 2009, sure to wow even seasoned observers. " That’s what NASA said January 10th.

A week before that we’ve been trying to figure out what planet is it that’s very visible near our area. So, my husband decided to take his telescope out from the closet. It was quiet hard to see it from afar on the first night since it’s moving so fast. It was very clear last Saturday though. We can even see the scars on that planet and it’s twinkling. It was very fascinating to me since it’s my first time to see a planet (or maybe it was a star) and a moon from a telescope, hahaha!
However, last Saturday the moon was really hard to find unlike the previous nights. We even thought Rosa might have cleaned the lens the afternoon, it was all so bright- quiet hard to focus. Hmm, we were wondering if it was because it’s said to be the brightest or maybe the lens was just dirty. Well, it was worth a try though. Still, it was such a nice picture of a big, full moon! We live near the beach and so the moon is very picturesque from there as its lights reflect on the ocean. How wonderful!

Wow! It must be a thrill to see the moon through the telescope na parang ang lapit-lapit lang ng moon. Have you seen the movie, A Walk to Remember? After I've watched it, I have since been wishing of having a big telescope at home :)

Yes, that is a very beautiful picture of the moon. And it is indeed very big. Good thing that you have an expensive telescope so you were able to make that beautiful shot of the moon. Thanks for the gorgeous post. God bless you always.

Your post brought back lot of memories for me. Back in high school, I was in the astronomy club and I had always enjoyed looking at the surfaces of the moon. When the moon is too bright, we used a filter to make viewing on the eyes easier. Of course the moon was not the only object in the sky we were looking for. We also looked at star clusters, Jupiter and its moon and we had a rare chance of spotting Saturn once. The view of Saturn was breathtaking; seeing the planet and the rings going around it.

I miss looking at the moon. We also live near the beach and at this time of year, we don't see the moon while inside the house because the shutters and blinds and all the draperies are shut to keep away the frigid temps. moon watching will have to wait. now I wish the summer is here.

I had been able to watch the Wolf Moon last Saturday and Sunday. I was able to capture it in my digicam and used the photos in my Sky Watch Friday.
